Devon County Show Day 3

The weather was wonderful and the crowds flocked to the final day of this year’s Devon County Show.   The main feature for the SDCC Media Team today was reporting on the BBC’s tent and at 9.15 the team were guests on the John Govier Show on Radio Devon where they talked about their work at the Show and John asked the listeners to set two of the teams some filming challenges…..  and they came up with some good ones!

Conor, Claire, Tilly and Erin spent the morning on the challenges, some of which proved to be quite tricky.  They tracked down Young Farmer official Matt Palmer in the sheep tent, Hilary Hanson in the rare breed tent, and followed up other Radio Devon listener requests which took them to all four corners of the showground including the Bee Tent, The Great Gorillas Project at the Paignton Zoo stand, and the main arena where they interviewed one of the Dancing Diggers display team.  They also strapped a special mobile camera to his chest which recorded throughout the display.

Betsy and Finn stayed on at the BBC tent to make the feature about the BBC at the Show.   Spotlight presenter Justin Leigh showed the team around the tent and then took them backstage for an insight into what went on behind the scenes.  They also interviewed ‘Voice’ star Adam Isaacs and Radio Devon presenter John Govier to complete a very entertaining package.  Many thanks to the BBC for their generous hospitality.

All in all this has been a fantastic experience for the SDCC Media Team.  In just over a week they have become accomplished journalists, filming, editing and uploading over a dozen reports, including a royal visit and a government minister, at one of the country’s biggest agricultural shows.  They’ve all worked extremely hard, putting in three very long day and some of their experiences are chronicled in Finn’s montage and the Tilly and Erin’s quite startling ‘Goodbye’.

Thank you Betsy, Claire, Conor, Erin, Finn and Tilly for all your efforts!

A big thank you, too, to all the staff who gave up many hours of their own time to work on this project: Steven Brown and Ben Iskander for helping with the editing and students reports, Sam Morcumb for her enthusiasm, creativity and new found radio presenting skills, Steve Cayley of Lincom Media for helping to document the entire event and last but certainly not least, someone without whom none of this would have been possible…..Richard Penhale, SDCC’s ICT Systems Manager, who spent six hours a day driving the students to and from the show and two hours uploading all the material each evening as well as 10 hours a day at the Show itself.    Thank you Mr Penhale, it was well worth it!

Finally a special thank you to Babcock LDP for inviting us to be part of their stand and to Katrina Davies, Babcock LDP’s Marketing Manager, and Tim Arnold, Director of Dart Education, who conceived and ran the whole project.

Devon County Show Day 2

Today started with Westpoint bathed in brilliant sunshine and, after their 8.15 am  production meeting, the SDCC team got to work on their three main features as there were suspicions that the weather might change.

Finn and Tilly met with Anthony Gibson, the Devon County Show’s Agricultural Adviser and formerly Regional Director of the National Farmer’s Union, to record a piece called “Curious about Cattle”, a fascinating look at the variety of cattle there is in Devon.  Do you know which cows are for milk and which for meat?  They do now!

David Heath, Minister of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was visiting the Show today and Finn and Tilly were also lucky enough to get an interview with him after he left a debate in the Young Farmers’ marquee.

The team recorded five other features today.  Conor and Erin spent a fruitful hour looking at food and drink, which is a massively important part of show – bread, cheese, chillies and chocolate to meat vegetables and wine.  It’s all here and more - and you might also like to visit the fascinating food directory at www.devoncountyshow.co.uk/food-directory .

Betsy and Claire spent the morning looking at Babcock LDP’s contribution to the show.  Babcock LDP is a joint venture with Devon County Council and provides school improvement services for schools in Devon, the Southwest and throughout the UK.  As well as supporting the SDCC Media Team’s work at the show, Babcock LDP is also running the Bandstand which today featured hundreds of Devon children and students making fantastic music.   As expected, the heaven’s opened just after lunch, but this didn’t deter the audience or the performers who put on a great show.

There are also features on cars, small animals and bees – and tomorrow the team will be heading for the John Govier Show on Radio Devon and reporting on the BBC at the Devon County Show.
